How often should dentures be relined?

Dentures should be relined or replaced every five to 10 years in order to maintain one’s oral health.

If you are missing some or all of your natural teeth, you are likely to benefit considerably from a restorative treatment such as dentures. Dentures help to restore full oral function and can go a long way in improving the appearance of one’s smile. Read on to find out how long you can expect dentures to last, and when it may be necessary to have them relined…

When should dentures be relined?

Dentures are a highly effective treatment when it comes to restoring oral functions like speech and eating, and they also help to minimize changes to the bone and oral tissue. Over time, however, it is possible for certain changes to affect the gums and therefore the way in which dentures fit. Other complications that can lead to ill-fitting dentures include mouth ulcers, irritation and infections. If you experience any of these issues and you have noticed that your dentures no longer feel as comfortable as they used to, it is advisable that you see your dentist as soon as possible.

Although dentures are made of highly durable materials, it is possible for them to wear out over time. The pressure of biting and general daily use can cause certain areas of the denture to wear down or crack. Improper cleaning and maintenance can also cause dentures to become damaged, in which case it is necessary to have them repaired or relined.

How are dentures relined?

During the relining process, new material is added to the inner plate of the dentures. The purpose of this process is to compensate for any changes in the tissues of the mouth or to replace worn down or broken areas of the denture.

In some cases, dentures can be quickly relined in your dentist’s office, although it is sometimes necessary for your dentist to take impressions of your mouth. If considerable changes need to be made, your dentures may be sent to a laboratory to be relined.

Even with proper care, you can expect to have your dentures repaired, relined or replaced at some stage. It is generally recommended that dentures are relined or replaced every five to 10 years in order to keep your gums and jawbone healthy.

How can we help?

At Elite Dental of Staten Island, we offer a comprehensive range of dental services, including dentures. We offer dentures in two forms: complete and partial. Complete dentures are often a good option for patients who are missing all of their natural teeth, while partial dentures are suited to those who have some natural teeth remaining.

If you already have dentures, we recommend that you come in for a check-up every six months. This will ensure that any necessary adjustments are made and that any oral health issues are identified and resolved as soon as possible. Your dentures should feel stable and comfortable in your mouth, so if you have noticed any changes in the way that they fit, it may be time for a reline or adjustment.

If you are interested in having dentures fitted, or are in need of a repair or reline, we encourage you to come in and see us. Our team is highly experienced and available to address any questions or concerns that you might have about maintaining the condition of your dentures, as well as your oral health.
