The Journal of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry

In an article named Replacement of an Implant and Prosthesis in the Premaxilla Due to a Malposition and Prosthetic Failure: A Clinical Case Letter published in the Journal of American Academy of Implant Dentistry, Dr. Jenna Polinsky discussed the concerns associated with the dental implant procedure.

In the past, the focus concern for the dental implant treatment was on the dental implant placement. In recent years however, evidence suggests that the dental implant, the implant-supported restoration and the health of the patient play equally important roles in the success of the treatment.

Dr. Jenna Polinsky worked alongside Dr. Vito Cardo, Dr. Elliot Koschitzki and Dr. Nachum Augenbaum to discuss: how the depth and angle of the dental implant, along with the alignment, height and shape of the crown, influence the patient in regards to the appearance and functionality of the implant treatment.

Why is it important to ensure your dental implant dentist is suitable for the procedure?

In the journal article named above, Dr. Polinsky and her team discuss a case where a patient received a treatment that wasn’t quite sited to his needs.

The Case:

In this case, the gentleman visited the dental implant clinic at Brookdale University Hospital claiming that his front tooth was too short and is chipped. This patient had undergone a bone graft and had an implant placed in the space of his front tooth 2 years prior.

An intraoral examination showed that the crown was made from porcelain fused to metal and it was wide and short in shape, chipped and considered not aesthetically pleasing. Furthermore, X-rays showed that since the bone graft there was around 50% bone loss. This is thought to be because the initial bone graft had failed.

In order to resolve the problem, the team had to remove the existing restoration and dental implant. With the patient’s written and verbal consent, they carried out another bone graft to restore the area so a dental implant can be supported. The implant was accurately placed for maximum comfort and suitability.

After 3 months of healing, a connective tissue graft was stitched into the area and left to heal. A temporary crown was carefully designed to help sculpt the soft tissues around the area. Once ready, a crown was fabricated from translucent-like materials that provide maximum durability and strength.
