Does Invisalign really work?

Invisalign is an effective orthodontic treatment in many cases.

If you would like to straighten your teeth, but would prefer a more discreet treatment than traditional metal braces, you might consider Invisalign. The treatment involves the use of clear plastic aligners that work by exerting pressure on the teeth and shifting them into new positions gradually over time. While Invisalign is not suitable for everyone — complex orthodontic cases can’t be resolved with clear aligners, for example — the treatment does have its benefits. Read on to find out more about Invisalign and how it works…

What issues can Invisalign resolve? Invisalign is generally not recommended for the treatment of complex orthodontic issues, but it can be used to correct a variety of issues. These include some mild and moderate bite problems, such as certain types of overbite, underbite and crossbite issues and an open bite. Invisalign may also be used to resolve gaps between the teeth, as well as crowded teeth.

What does the treatment involve?

If you are considering the treatment, the first step you should take is to see your dentist for a consultation. Your dentist will assess your oral health and orthodontic needs, and let you know if the treatment is right for you.

Once you are ready to go ahead with the process, your dentist will create a 3D image of your mouth, which will be used to plan your Invisalign treatment. Thanks to 3D imaging technology, you will actually be able to see what your final results will look like before undergoing treatment. A series of plastic aligners will then be fabricated, each of which will be custom-made for your unique needs and comfort.

You will need to wear your aligners for up to 22 hours a day, although you can remove them for eating, drinking and cleaning. Depending on your treatment plan, you will need to replace your aligners every week or two. The aligners work by applying pressure to your teeth, gradually moving them into new positions over time.

Is there a downside to choosing Invisalign?

While there are many benefits to choosing Invisalign — they are easily cleaned, very comfortable, and provide a discreet orthodontic solution — there are a few factors worth considering before you begin treatment.

It is important to note that clear aligners are not the most effective choice when it comes to resolving more complex issues. We recommend speaking to your dentist about your specific concerns and needs, as another treatment may suit you better.

Another factor to consider is that you will need to comply with your dentist’s instructions if you choose to wear Invisalign aligners. In order to enjoy optimal results, you must wear your aligners for 20 to 22 hours every day. If you don’t feel that you can commit to this level of compliance, the treatment may not be right for you.

These factors aside, Invisalign is suitable for the majority of adolescents and adults and can achieve some excellent results.
