Children’s airway concerns

Susceptibility of children to airway problems

Anatomic features of the immature airway, age-related developmental issues, and general health susceptibilities lead to increased risk for severe airway restriction in pediatric patients.

As many of the child’s features are underdeveloped as compared to an adult, a number of factors directly affecting the restriction of airways and susceptibility to sleep apnea become heightened.

Causes of children’s airway concerns

When you sleep, your muscles will relax. Muscles in the throat and mouth which help to keep the airways open can relax and obstruct the airway. Developmental issues within the jaw, mouth or throat can directly affect the airway and lead to sleep apnea. Some of the causes of these issues can stem from:

  • A family history of sleep apnea
  • Being overweight
  • Defects in the structure of the mouth, jaw or throat
  • Underdeveloped features surrounding the airway

Children’s airway treatment at Elite Dental of Staten Island

Elite Dental of Staten Island understand how important it is to recognize and treat children’s airway concerns early. When left unattended, issues can develop and become harder to treat in later stages of life. We offer a range of treatment options and encourage families to attend regular wellness check-ups to ensure the well being of their children.
